The first day of the 33rd edition of the Scopigno Cup – World Football Tournament – concluded with four matches that provided goals and excitement, setting the stage for an edition marked by uncertainty and far-from-predictable outcomes.
The opening match, before the RaiSport cameras and the Mameli anthem sung by local tenor Federico Piermarini, were the two Roman teams, Lazio and Roma, who at the Scopigno stadium in front of more than three hundred spectators, played out a 0-0 derby characterized by both technical and tactical balance.
During the interval, performances by Niccolò Franceschini, star of the Rai talent show The Voice Kids, and those by Alessandra Novelli and her daughter Giulia Ghirlanda, admired on Io Canto Family, the show hosted by Michelle Hunziker, earned applause from the audience. Matteo Materazzi, brother of Marco, a World Cup winner in Berlin in 2006 with the Italian national team, also performed. Despite battling illness, he wanted to follow his son Gianfilippo, who plays for Lazio. He had the honor of kicking off alongside Rieti Mayor Daniele Sinibaldi and Scopigno Cup patron Fabrizio Formichetti.
But the opening day saw six other teams take to the field in their respective groups: in Naples, Avellino beat Benevento 1-0, at the Tilesi Stadium in Amatrice, Japanese side Vegalta Sendai narrowly defeated Ternana (1-0), while at the Rietello Sports Center, Fiorentina won 10-0 against Rieti.
Today, four more matches are scheduled: Vegalta-Juventus (3:30 PM, Rietello), Napoli-Avellino (5 PM, Casola Stadium in Naples), Lazio-Midtjylland (6 PM, Tilesi Stadium in Amatrice), and Rieti-Atalanta (6 PM, Rietello).
